The Lion King

2.8DC
I started watching Lion King in 3D without any sense of nostalgic value as I had never seen the movie as a kid. Overall, I thought the 3D was quite well done, with a good sense of depth and occasional pop-out. There were issues though. The main one being that the characters looked a bit flat throughout and occasionally facial features and body parts protruded in an unnatural and inconsistent way. In defense of this, it must have been a difficult task to take what was essentially flat looking cell animation and give objects any sense of solidity to them. The results are quite good, but inconsistent at best.
The Lion King itself is an enjoyable, if slightly dated looking animation in the Disney tradition. Standout dramatic moments are the stampede and final battle scenes.(v)
